The lateral braid, also called horizontal braid, Vikkel braid or Estonian braid, is a special knitting technique that will create an horizontal ridge on your knitting. While stitches are naturally vertically inclined, the stitches of a lateral braid are horizontal! In my humble opinion, and considering that I am fascinated by outstanding knitting techniques that will add a special finishing to your knitting project, this is spectacular!
Let me show you how this special braid is done.

Setup: CO 1 st using the cable cast-on method: insert RH needle between the first two stitches, wrap yarn around the needle and drag a loop. Place the loop on the LH needle.
Step 1: knit the second stitch through the back loop, without dropping the stitch.
Step 2: knit the first stitch through the front loop.
Drop both stitches off the LH needle.
Step 3: slip the last stitch worked back to the LH needle.
Repeat steps 1-3 until only two stitches are left on the LH needle.
Final step: knit last 2 stitches together through the back loop.
Tip: try knitting the next row tightly as the braid will create elongated stitches that will appear as a loose row. However, the gap above the braid will resolve after working more rows.
